Cynthia Erivo recently shared her heartfelt journey with Wicked during an emotional discussion featuring the film’s stars alongside Broadway legends who helped carve the musical's legacy. While seated with Ariana Grande, Idina Menzel, and Kristin Chenoweth, Erivo became visibly emotional, reflecting on how profoundly their performances influenced her even before she took on the role of Elphaba. She revealed that she had spent years absorbed in Menzel and Chenoweth’s musical renditions, finding it surreal to now share space with the artists whose voices fueled her aspirations.
As Erivo's emotions surfaced, Grande and Chenoweth grasped each other's hands for support, while Menzel comfortingly embraced her. Displaying the same affect, Chenoweth expressed to Erivo that the impact of Wicked continues through her and new talent entering this beloved narrative. She emphasized that every artist hopes their work resonates, and witnessing its ongoing journey through the film was especially impactful. Grateful for the chance to fulfill a lifelong aspiration, Erivo acknowledged the original stars for creating a universe that made her dream possible, marking the rarity of their shared sincere exchange. Menzel lightened the mood with a playful remark, expressing her appreciation that they were “still alive” to witness the story's evolution.
Erivo also revealed that some of the most touching scenes in the film's farewell moment, For Good, were spontaneous. During the tear-jerking farewell between Elphaba and Glinda, she and Ariana Grande continued their performance beyond the song’s conclusion. Director Jon M. Chu allowed the camera to run, capturing impromptu dialogues like “What’s going on?” and “I love you”—lines that were unplanned yet authentically echoed the profound nature of their characters' farewell.
After filming, Erivo penned a heartfelt note to her fans, expressing immense gratitude for embodying Elphaba. She conveyed that this role deeply transformed her and thanked audiences for embracing her portrayal of one of musical theatre's enduring characters.
These touching moments, both from behind the scenes and within the film, illustrate Wicked’s enduring resonance across generations. The bond between its original stars and the current cast underlines the timeless significance of a tale that continues to inspire, transform, and thrive.
