Former USA Olympic gold medalist David Lee has spearheaded the Bengaluru Torpedoes to triumph in the 2025 Prime Volleyball League (PVL), reflecting his profound grasp of India's volleyball scene. With six years of playing and coaching experience in India, Lee credits the surge of youthful talent for the sport's optimistic trajectory.
“The younger players are stepping up earlier and making significant contributions,” Lee remarked, highlighting the new vigor that is replacing the veteran presence that had long prevailed. Although India has struggled on the international stage—with no Olympic qualifications and only a few Asian medals since the 1980s—the national squad has displayed promising signs, securing a silver medal at this year's CAVA Nations League.
Lee noted that while Indian athletes shine in offensive skills like spiking and blocking, the primary challenge remains in defense and ball control. “Nations such as Japan, Korea, and China emphasize passing and defensive strategies, which is where India needs enhancement,” he pointed out.
The growth of the sport has been impeded by political uncertainties within the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), which has faced various suspensions in recent years. The PVL has now established itself as an independent entity with ten teams, successfully completing four seasons.
Lee advocates for a lengthier PVL season and more prolonged training camps for the national team to foster consistency and gain international experience, which he asserts are critical for India to rise in the global volleyball rankings.
