In an impressive comeback, San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox made a remarkable return to action on Saturday, scoring 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting during a victory against the New Orleans Pelicans. This win bolstered the Spurs' position in the Southwest Division, providing much-needed momentum following Fox's two-week absence due to a hamstring injury.
Fox's return was especially significant, marking his first game since March. Earlier this year, he underwent surgery for a torn tendon in his left pinky after his move to San Antonio from Sacramento through a three-team trade. Despite the time off, Fox showcased his skills, adding three rebounds and three assists in over 31 minutes of play.
Spurs teammate Devin Vassell expressed that Fox’s return was simply “Fox being Fox,” highlighting how seamlessly he led and contributed on the court. Coach Gregg Popovich commended Fox for his poise and his ability to enhance the team’s offensive dynamics. Although Fox acknowledged some residual rust, he was thrilled to be back in competitive action.
“Of course, there was some rust,” Fox remarked post-game. “I had played some five-on-five beforehand but hadn’t engaged in real games since March. This was a significant test for me, but I’m just glad to be back out there.” His candid remarks indicated both his enthusiasm and hope for regaining full form in the weeks ahead.
Rising star Victor Wembanyama aided Fox with an impressive performance of his own, contributing 18 points and 18 rebounds for his first double-double since October 30. His defensive prowess and rebounding were instrumental in securing the win, complementing Fox's return. The chemistry between Fox and Wembanyama is becoming a promising prospect for the Spurs this season.
Beyond Fox’s remarkable comeback, the victory also helped the Spurs break their losing streak after struggling in recent games. The team is now looking to harness this energy as they prepare for their upcoming challenge against the Chicago Bulls, where they aim to end a six-game losing streak versus them going back to February 2023.
The Bulls, who themselves are facing challenges with back-to-back losses and three defeats in four games, will host the Spurs next. Chicago has struggled to contain top NBA talents, having recently allowed prolific performances from stars like Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell. Stopping both Fox and Wembanyama poses a formidable task for the Bulls' defense.
Bulls coach Billy Donovan stressed the importance of teamwork, stating that his squad must “find ways collectively to generate more spacing and penetration.” He highlighted the necessity of better ball movement and synchronization to create scoring opportunities, acknowledging that elite players draw defensive focus, while his team needs to establish their own offensive rhythm.
Chicago’s previous matchups have been defined by squandered moments. Against the Cavaliers, they lost a 19-point lead in the second quarter and a 16-point lead later on. Guard Josh Giddey also voiced the need for improved execution in critical game moments as the Bulls look to rectify these concerns before facing an energized Spurs side.
The Spurs are optimistic about Fox’s influence on the team. His leadership, agility, and experience provide essential support for the young roster to elevate their game. As Wembanyama continues to grow and Fox regains his rhythm, San Antonio is poised to emerge as a compelling team this season.
As the Spurs prepare for their matchup against the Bulls, it will serve as a critical test for both teams. Chicago’s Nikola Vucevic has been a reliable offensive threat against San Antonio, averaging 24.8 points and 11.2 rebounds in his last five encounters. Patrick Williams has also consistently scored in double digits in their previous matchups. Yet, with Fox and Wembanyama at the helm, the Spurs are determined to shift the momentum in their favor.
