A shocking incident unfolded at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina on Sunday morning when airport maintenance staff discovered a dead body inside the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, had arrived from Frankfurt Airport, Germany, and had been parked at the airport for almost two days before the grim discovery during routine maintenance checks around 9 a.m.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed the individual was pronounced dead at the scene and immediately launched a homicide investigation. Authorities are working to determine how and when the person accessed the aircraft and whether it was an attempt to stow away. In a statement, American Airlines said it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Stowaways hiding in airplane wheel wells are extremely rare, and survival is even rarer. The Federal Aviation Administration reports that over 77% of stowaways who attempt to hide in wheel wells die due to exposure to freezing temperatures, lack of oxygen, and extreme wind chill at cruising altitudes. Aviation experts explain that the conditions at heights above 35,000 feet can cause severe frostbite, loss of limbs, or even death in a matter of minutes.
This recent discovery comes after similar tragic incidents. In January, two teenage stowaways were found dead in the wheel well of a JetBlue flight. However, not all attempts end in tragedy. Last week, a 13-year-old boy survived a 90-minute flight from Kabul to Delhi by hiding in the landing gear compartment of a Kam Air plane. According to reports, the boy had accidentally entered the compartment out of curiosity and was safely repatriated to Afghanistan after the flight.
Authorities continue to investigate this latest case to uncover the circumstances behind the stowaway’s death. The incident has raised concerns about airport security and the dangers of attempting to stow away in aircraft landing gear compartments, which experts warn is extremely hazardous and almost always fatal.
