The Indian passenger car market closed the calendar year with a significant surge in retail volumes, recording a year-on-year growth of more than 25 percent in December 2025 compared to the same month the year before. This increase was fuelled by a combination of year-end promotions, festive offers, tax incentives and strong consumer demand as buyers rushed to secure vehicles before the new year began.
India’s car sales dynamics have been upbeat in the last months of 2025, reflecting rising consumer confidence, attractive price points from manufacturers and an expanding product lineup tailored to various segments — from entry-level hatchbacks to lifestyle SUVs and premium sedans.
Topping the December 2025 sales chart was the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which sold 22,108 units during the month — a remarkable performance with significant year-on-year growth compared to December 2024. The Baleno’s success highlights the continued consumer demand for premium hatchbacks that balance affordability, practicality and modern features.
Just behind Baleno was the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which secured the second spot with 20,706 units sold. The Fronx, a crossover-styled compact from Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa range, has excelled in capturing buyers looking for a blend of hatchback efficiency and SUV aesthetics.
In third position stood the Tata Nexon, with 19,375 units sold in December. The compact SUV has consistently been among India’s most popular models, largely due to its combination of safety ratings, design appeal and diverse powertrain options, including petrol, diesel and electric variants.

This chart reflects a diverse cross-section of vehicles appealing to Indian buyers, from compact city cars and family sedans to rugged SUVs and versatile multipurpose vehicles.
Several hatchbacks made it into the top 25, underscoring the segment’s resilience and utility in urban environments. Models like Baleno, Swift, WagonR, Alto and Tiago continued to attract buyers seeking fuel efficiency, easy manoeuvrability and lower ownership costs — attributes that remain highly valued in congested cities and among first-time car owners.
The SUV segment remained a dominant force in December sales, with vehicles like Tata Nexon, Fronx, Brezza, Creta, XUV 3XO, Sonet and Thar featuring prominently. These sport utility vehicles offer higher driving positions, rugged styling and versatile usage, which resonate with Indian families as well as buyers seeking a more adventurous driving experience.
The presence of multiple SUVs in the top 10 highlights how this segment continues to outpace traditional sedans and MPVs in terms of consumer preference and sales volume.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Toyota Innova + Hycross showcase that sedans and family multipurpose vehicles still hold substantial market appeal, particularly among buyers valuing space, comfort and long-distance practicality.
December is traditionally a strong month for car sales in India, attributed to a combination of festival seasons, year-end discounts, attractive financing offers and promotional deals from manufacturers and dealerships. These incentives encourage buyers to make purchases before the start of the new year, contributing to the sales jump observed in December 2025.
Government policies such as reduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) on smaller cars have made certain models more affordable, boosting volumes especially in sub-4m segments that dominate the top of the sales chart.
Buyers from both urban and semi-urban regions played a significant role in pushing sales figures upward. While urban buyers gravitated toward premium hatchbacks and SUVs, rural markets showed strong demand for rugged models like Bolero and Scorpio — vehicles known for durability and simplicity.
Maruti Suzuki once again demonstrated overwhelming strength in the Indian market, with multiple models occupying top spots in December 2025 sales. Baleno, Fronx, Dzire, Swift, Brezza, Ertiga, WagonR, Eeco, Alto and Victoris collectively assert the brand’s broad appeal across segments from hatchbacks to SUVs and MPVs.
This performance aligns with reports that Maruti Suzuki recorded record high overall sales for December 2025, showcasing its continued leadership and unmatched network reach.
Tata Motors also made its presence felt, with models like Nexon, Punch, Tiago and Sierra generating robust sales figures. The Nexon’s placement in the top three highlights strong demand for compact SUVs with safety and feature appeal.
Mahindra, similarly, performed well with offerings such as Scorpio, XUV 3XO and Thar — reflecting its strength in rugged SUV segments suited to diverse Indian terrains and preferences.
Brands like Hyundai and Toyota also featured in the list. Hyundai’s Creta and Venue remained popular, while Toyota’s Innova + Hycross and Hyryder highlighted continued preference for premium multi-utility vehicles.
The December 2025 sales chart offers broader insights into how India’s car market is evolving:
Compact, Efficient Vehicles Continue to Sell: Cars like Baleno, Swift and WagonR remain favourites for buyers looking for practical, fuel-efficient transportation.
