Novak Djokovic once again proved his resilience as he fought through injury and extreme heat to secure a place in the Shanghai Masters 2025 quarterfinals. On Tuesday, the 38-year-old Serbian champion defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in a grueling match that lasted two hours and 41 minutes.
Djokovic injured his left leg in the first set, forcing him to take a medical timeout. Despite the setback, he managed to stay focused and won the opener 6-3. However, the hot and humid conditions in Shanghai added to his struggles. With the temperature around 30°C and humidity near 80 percent, Djokovic needed medical checks for heat exhaustion during the contest.
Munar, ranked 41 in the world, fought back strongly in the second set. He held his serve consistently and after a 75-minute battle, he claimed the set 7-5. Djokovic, visibly exhausted and often bending over in fatigue, looked in trouble but refused to give in.
In the deciding set, the 24-time Grand Slam winner used his experience and determination to turn the match around. With two crucial service breaks, he took the final set 6-2. After sealing victory, Djokovic collapsed on the court, showing how physically demanding the encounter had been. He will now face Belgian player Zizou Bergs in the quarterfinals.
The harsh conditions in Shanghai have caused difficulties for several players. Earlier, Djokovic had vomited during his match against Yannick Hanfmann. World number two Jannik Sinner was also forced to retire from his match due to severe cramps. In another event, Emma Raducanu had to withdraw from her Wuhan Open clash against Ann Li after suffering from exhaustion and low blood pressure.
Djokovic had already described the conditions as “brutal,” and his latest match once again highlighted the extreme challenges faced by players. Despite all odds, he continues his quest for another Masters 1000 title, proving why he remains one of the toughest and most determined players in tennis.
