Novak Djokovic has decided not to play in the upcoming Cincinnati Masters tournament, which is set to begin this week. This surprising decision means the 38-year-old tennis star from Serbia will not play any matches between his loss at Wimbledon and the upcoming US Open, which starts in three weeks.
The news came exactly one year after Djokovic’s proudest Olympic moment, when he won the gold medal in singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His fans were looking forward to seeing him in action again, especially in Cincinnati, where he has a long history of competing.
Djokovic Takes a Break After Wimbledon
Djokovic’s most recent match was at Wimbledon in early July, where he lost in the semi-finals to Italy’s Jannik Sinner. That match was tough and intense, and many believe it took a toll on Djokovic’s body and energy.
After that loss, Djokovic decided not to join the ATP Masters event in Toronto, and now he has also chosen to skip Cincinnati. This means he is focusing on getting enough rest and preparing his body and mind for the US Open, one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year.
A Veteran With a Legendary Career
Novak Djokovic is known as one of the greatest tennis players in history. He has won 24 Grand Slam titles, which is more than any other man in tennis history. He first played in Cincinnati back in 2005 and has had a strong connection to the tournament ever since.
Over the years, he reached the finals six times in Cincinnati. He lost the first five finals before finally winning the title in 2018. He won it again in 2020 and 2023, with last year’s win being his most recent title there.
Now, by pulling out of this year’s edition, Djokovic ends a long and loyal history with the Cincinnati event, at least for now.
Jannik Sinner Gets Ready in Cincinnati
While Djokovic rests, Jannik Sinner, who beat him at Wimbledon, has already arrived in Cincinnati. The 23-year-old Italian is currently ranked number one in the world and is expected to be one of the favorites for the title.
Sinner skipped the Toronto Masters as well, choosing to rest after Wimbledon, but arrived in Cincinnati early to begin practice. On Sunday, he had his first hitting session, and on Monday, he posted a cheerful photo on social media while relaxing on a golf course with his team.
His early arrival shows that he is focused and ready to continue his strong season.
Focus Shifts to the US Open
With the US Open just a few weeks away, Djokovic’s decision to rest may be a smart move. At his age, managing his schedule carefully is important to stay healthy and competitive. Playing too many matches close together can lead to injuries, something he wants to avoid.
Fans will now wait eagerly to see if Djokovic can come back strong at the US Open, where he will likely face top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Both are much younger, and both are playing at a very high level this season.
Djokovic has already proven time and again that he can rise to the occasion, even when people doubt him. He may be skipping Cincinnati, but he’s not stepping away from the game. He’s just getting ready for the next big challenge.
