dnata, a prominent player in global air and travel services, has revealed plans to invest approximately A$32 million to create a dedicated cargo terminal at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI). This development underscores dnata’s dedication to fostering New South Wales’ aviation industry.
The facility will be located in a 5,000 sqm warehouse within WSI’s round-the-clock Cargo Precinct, complemented by an additional 4,000 sqm land area. The airport is set to provide the site in a cold shell condition; dnata will then fully fit out the facility, complete with critical infrastructure and a semi-motorised materials handling system.
Of the total investment, approximately A$6 million will be earmarked for cutting-edge equipment and technology, ensuring not only efficient but also scalable operations to handle specialized cargo, including pharmaceuticals and other temperature-sensitive items.
Freighter operations are scheduled to commence in July 2026, ahead of the airport's full passenger launch later this year. Once operational, the terminal is projected to manage up to 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually, significantly enhancing air freight capabilities in New South Wales.
This initiative is poised to generate around 50 direct jobs in its early stages, with further employment opportunities anticipated as operations expand. It will also bolster jobs in sectors like logistics, freight forwarding, and ground handling throughout Western Sydney.
WSI CEO Simon Hickey commented that dnata’s presence fortifies the airport’s role as a 24/7 cargo hub, bolstering national supply chains and enhancing freight connectivity. The cargo precinct will be strategically positioned near major transport routes and logistics centers like Kemps Creek and the Aerotropolis.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King stated that the project aims to strengthen Western Sydney's connections to global trade routes, supporting Australia's evolving logistics sector.
The WSI cargo precinct is strategically designed for long-term expansion, with the capability to handle at least 220,000 tonnes of freight annually and accommodate up to eight wide-body aircraft simultaneously.
This investment continues to build on dnata's previous commitment to launch an advanced inflight catering facility at WSI, capable of producing up to 3 million meals per year.
Operating across nine airports in Australia, dnata currently manages around 300,000 tonnes of cargo and records more than 107,000 aircraft movements yearly. Additionally, it prepares over 54 million airline meals annually and employs approximately 8,000 staff nationwide, highlighting its significant role in Australia's aviation and logistics landscape.
