DoorDash Inc., the top food delivery platform in the United States, has announced a strategic multiyear partnership with autonomous robot developer Serve Robotics Inc., marking a major step toward the future of automated deliveries. This collaboration aims to increase delivery speed and efficiency across several major urban markets.
Robots on the Streets
Serve Robotics’ autonomous robots, already operating in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta, will now begin fulfilling select DoorDash orders. These robots are designed for short-distance deliveries, typically under a mile, and can complete each trip in about 18 minutes. The partnership also allows Serve’s robots to operate across multiple delivery platforms, including Uber, similar to how gig workers alternate between apps.
Serve Robotics has seen a 29% rise in its stock recently and plans to double its fleet to 2,000 robots by the end of the year. This expansion will help reduce idle trips, known as “deadhead miles,” making deliveries more efficient without additional costs.
Blending Humans and Robots
DoorDash envisions a hybrid model for deliveries, where human couriers handle complex, large, or multi-stop orders, while autonomous robots focus on small, rapid urban deliveries. The company is also developing its own autonomous delivery robots for suburban areas, capable of carrying larger orders over longer distances at higher speeds.
Additionally, DoorDash is exploring drone delivery partnerships with Flytrex Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Wing, targeting quick, small deliveries in select US and Australian markets.
Beyond Food Delivery
Serve Robotics plans to expand its autonomous delivery services beyond food to groceries, pharmacies, and logistics within controlled environments such as shopping malls, hospitals, and factory floors. The increasing demand for automated delivery solutions reflects the growing role of robots in everyday commerce and the future of last-mile logistics.
With human couriers and autonomous robots working side by side, the US food delivery market is entering a new era. This partnership between DoorDash and Serve Robotics is set to make deliveries faster, smarter, and more convenient, paving the way for a technology-driven future in urban logistics.
