Nigerian authorities have charged the driver of a vehicle carrying British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua with reckless and dangerous driving following a fatal road accident in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria.
The driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was driving a Lexus SUV on Monday along the heavily used Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The vehicle was transporting Anthony Joshua and two of his close associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, when it crashed into a stationary truck parked on the highway.
According to police and state officials, the impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the immediate deaths of Ayodele and Ghami at the scene. Anthony Joshua and Kayode survived the crash and sustained minor injuries. Both were taken to hospital, where they received medical treatment before being discharged.
Kayode was taken into police custody after leaving the hospital on Thursday. Authorities later confirmed that he had been formally charged with reckless and dangerous driving. A court granted him bail in the sum of five million naira, requiring two sureties. He remains in custody until all bail conditions are fully met.
Preliminary investigations by traffic enforcement officials revealed that the SUV was travelling at an excessive speed before the crash occurred. Investigators also reported that a tyre burst while the vehicle was in motion, causing the driver to lose control before ramming into the parked truck.
Following his discharge from hospital earlier in the week, Anthony Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home to pay his last respects as arrangements were being made for the bodies of his deceased friends. Officials indicated that the remains were expected to be repatriated to the United Kingdom, and sources later suggested that this process may have already been completed.
The tragic incident has drawn attention to road safety concerns on Nigeria’s major highways, particularly the dangers posed by speeding and stationary vehicles. Anthony Joshua’s current whereabouts have not been made public, and no further statements have been released by his representatives at this time.
