The Dubai International Marine Club has made an official announcement regarding the establishment of the Supreme Organising Committee for the highly anticipated 35th edition of the Al Gaffal Race, showcasing 60-feet traditional dhows, which stands as one of the UAE’s most celebrated maritime events.
Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, this initiative was greenlit during the club’s second Board of Directors meeting for 2026.
Leadership of the Organising Committee
Dr. Ahmed Saeed bin Meshar will chair the newly formed Supreme Committee, with Saif Juma Al Suwaidi taking on the role of Vice-Chairman. The committee will also include members such as Khalid Khamis bin Dismal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib (CEO, Dubai International Marine Club). Additionally, Mohammed Fadhel Al Sadi has been designated as the Committee Rapporteur.
Strengthening Maritime Heritage
Dr. Ahmed Bin Meshar expressed appreciation for Dubai’s leadership in fostering marine sports and safeguarding national heritage. He emphasized that the Al Gaffal Race, which began in 1991, is a testament to the UAE’s enduring bond with the sea and its maritime traditions.
Recognized as a premier heritage marine sporting event in the Gulf, this race honors the historical voyages of pearl divers returning after lengthy sea sojourns.
Historical Importance of the Race
Since its inception, the Al Gaffal Race has evolved into a significant cultural and sporting occasion, attracting over 3,000 participants every year. Covering more than 50 nautical miles, it tests endurance, teamwork, and traditional sailing expertise.
During its 34th edition on 2 May last year, the event saw the participation of over 110 dhows, with Zilzal 25 emerging victorious near Burj Al Arab.
Updates on Safety and Schedule
Amid current regional conditions, the organising committee will vigilantly monitor developments to ensure the safety of all participants and officials. The race is preliminarily scheduled between 16 and 31 May, pending further assessment.
Authorities are in the process of creating contingency plans and establishing full logistical readiness in cooperation with pertinent government entities to uphold the highest safety protocols.
