Dubai Enforces New Signage Guidelines to Enhance Urban Aesthetics

Dubai Enforces New Signage Guidelines to Enhance Urban Aesthetics

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai has implemented stringent regulations regarding shop signage, aiming to enhance the city’s visual aesthetics, decrease clutter, and improve safety for road users.

These regulations come under the supervision of the Dubai Civility Committee and are administered by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). They stem from the Outdoor Advertising Manual published in 2024, developed in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Municipality, and Mada Media, the governing entity for outdoor advertising in Dubai.

Under the newly established guidelines, each business is restricted to displaying a single trade name on its storefront. The display of multiple signs or advertisements on one front is prohibited.

Design standards for signage have also been clarified. Trade names must be horizontally oriented, with Arabic text positioned above English. Furthermore, signs can extend from only one side of the shop

In order to maintain a coherent visual standard throughout the city, the size of signage must be proportional to that of the shop. Oversized, thick, or excessively large displays are not permitted. Additionally, regulations are in place for lighting, including permissible brightness levels and the use of approved measurement devices. Bright white backgrounds are discouraged.

The use of animated, moving, or video signage is completely banned. All signs must remain static in display.

Moreover, the installation of any trade-name signs on building balconies and the external facades of offices, clinics, and commercial units above the ground level is prohibited.

The DET will oversee the issuance of permits for signage and conduct inspections for adherence to these new regulations. Business owners and relevant organizations have been urged to comply and ensure uniformity in storefront designs.

Officials have stressed that these steps are designed to eliminate random decorative elements and excessive lighting, contributing to an improved urban landscape in Dubai. This initiative is congruent with the Dubai Civility Committee’s objectives and aligns with the vision outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which seeks to elevate the city’s visual appeal and international standing.
