Brussels is once again hosting top-level discussions between European Union trade ministers and US officials, marking the first major engagement since the July tariff deal. The talks aim to review existing trade commitments and explore ways to ease tensions over steel, aluminium, and related products.
The backdrop of the meetings is the tariff agreement reached in July, which imposed a 15-percent US levy on most EU exports. While both sides hailed the deal, unresolved issues remain. The European Union has been pushing for a reduction of the United States’ 50-percent duties on steel and aluminium, while Washington has sought modifications to EU green and digital regulations.
In August, the United States expanded its list of steel and aluminium “derivative products” to include 407 additional items, triggering higher tariffs on a broader range of European goods. Despite these developments, EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic emphasized that the current talks are primarily for reviewing progress, rather than negotiating new agreements.
Beyond tariffs, Brussels is exploring a broader “metals alliance” with the United States, aimed at shielding both economies from Chinese overcapacity in steel and aluminium. Several EU ministers have highlighted steel as a key priority. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys and Poland’s Michal Baranowski both stressed the importance of swiftly implementing the joint statements from August and working toward stabilizing tariffs.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the talks as an opportunity to strengthen trade relations and tackle shared challenges, including global trade system issues and China’s market influence.
With the discussions underway, officials on both sides appear cautious about expecting immediate breakthroughs. Yet, the meetings signal a continued commitment to dialogue and coordinated trade management, especially in sectors critical to the EU and US economies.
