During a recent meeting in Brussels, European foreign ministers underscored that any framework aimed at concluding the war in Ukraine should include both Ukrainian and European stakeholders, especially in light of recent U.S. proposals.
The U.S. has put forward a plan that involves Ukraine relinquishing control over certain territories and reducing its military presence, raising alarm among European leaders about the implications for Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
At the Thursday meeting, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas endorsed efforts to attain a lasting and just peace. She made it clear that any effective peace proposal must be agreed upon by both Ukrainian leaders and European nations.
The foreign ministers highlighted the importance of having Ukraine at the forefront of any discussions regarding its territorial integrity, military strength, and defense strategies. They warned that any exclusion of Ukraine could destabilize the region further.
This appeal from European leaders occurs within a broader context of ongoing diplomatic moves to reach a peaceful end to the conflict that started with Russia's invasion in 2022. The ministers reiterated Europe's dedication to backing Ukraine while pursuing a negotiated solution that honors its sovereignty and complies with international law.
Discussions centered on aligning European and global efforts to support Ukraine, ensuring future agreements are resilient, and avoiding unilateral actions that might disrupt peace efforts in the region.
The ministers also reaffirmed the necessity of ongoing military, economic, and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, emphasizing that any settlements must not impede Ukraine's right to self-defense or threaten the security of Europe.
This unified European position signifies that any U.S. initiative will require extensive dialogue with European allies and Ukraine to ensure that peace initiatives are both inclusive and equitable.
