In a dramatic playoff showdown in the Western Hockey League, the Prince George Cougars found themselves facing a bizarre two-minute bench penalty when fans hurled beer and other items onto the ice during Game 4 versus the Penticton Vees.
Tensions ran high in Prince George as frustrated fans reacted to a series of contentious calls against their team, filling the arena with loud chants directed at the referees.
Things escalated during the third period when several penalties were handed to the Cougars, which included a five-minute major and a game misconduct for defenceman Corbin Vaughan, who faced scrutiny over a check that many believed was legal. Following yet another delay-of-game penalty, spectators began to toss beverages and debris onto the ice, despite earlier warnings from officials.
In an unprecedented move, referees imposed a bench minor penalty, surprising many, including Cougars head coach Mark Lamb, who stated he had never witnessed such an event throughout his extensive hockey career.
This fan uproar had a tangible effect on the game's result, with the Vees taking advantage of the situation to net four power-play goals—three occurring in the final minutes—for a 5-2 victory, leveling the playoff series at 2-2.
The match also saw a fight erupt in the stands, further contributing to the mayhem. The Cougars later shared on social media that it was one of the most unusual games they had ever played.
The league has yet to respond in detail regarding the incident, igniting conversations on fan behavior and game management during critical playoff scenarios.
