A troubling incident unfolded just blocks from the White House on Thanksgiving eve, with two National Guard soldiers now fighting for their lives. The FBI and a joint terrorism task force are rigorously investigating the motive behind the gunfire from an Afghan immigrant in what has been labeled an “ambush-style” attack. This shocking event has ignited political discourse, raised questions about immigration policies, and highlighted concerns about rising tensions nationwide.

The shooting occurred around noon outside a bustling subway station in Washington, D.C., an area frequented by office workers, tourists, and shoppers, which adds to the severity of the situation. According to law enforcement, the two soldiers belong to a security patrol assigned months ago by former President Donald Trump. They were positioned near the entrance when a suspect unexpectedly approached and discharged his weapon.

Both West Virginia National Guard soldiers were struck multiple times and swiftly transported to the hospital in critical condition. Other guardsmen in the vicinity promptly engaged, trading gunfire with the assailant, who sustained injuries and was apprehended on-site.

The perpetrator has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, initiated during President Joe Biden's term to assist Afghans who supported U.S. forces during the Afghanistan conflict. A relative stated to NBC News that Lakanwal had a decade-long service in the Afghan army and had collaborated with American Special Forces.

Authorities confirmed that Lakanwal had no prior criminal record in the U.S. He had filed for asylum in late 2024, receiving approval earlier this year. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly residing in Washington state and employed at Amazon.

In light of the shooting, the Secret Service temporarily initiated a security lockdown of the White House as a precautionary measure. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that President Trump had requested an additional deployment of 500 National Guard troops to bolster Washington's security.

This violent episode prompted swift and intense political reactions. President Trump, while in Florida, referred to the shooting as “an act of evil, hatred, and terror” via video message and stated that his administration would reassess all Afghan immigrants admitted during President Biden's administration.

Shortly after Trump's statement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services declared a halt to processing immigration applications related to Afghan nationals, citing the need to evaluate their security and screening protocols.

Vice President JD Vance supported the notion that the attack validated more stringent immigration policies, asserting the necessity for the U.S. to take decisive action against individuals he claimed “have no right to be here.”

Conversely, critics argue that the Trump administration is exploiting the tragedy to push harsh immigration measures. Numerous community and civil rights organizations contend that broad decisions made without evidence will unfairly impact innocent individuals.

This event unfolds amidst heightened tensions in Washington, as just five days earlier, a federal judge ruled that National Guard troops were prohibited from performing law enforcement duties in the city without the mayor's consent—a ruling currently delayed due to the Trump administration's appeal.
