PM Urges New Growth Model For Dong Thap

PM Urges New Growth Model For Dong Thap

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has called on Dong Thap province to define a completely new growth model focused on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation in order to achieve long-term economic progress and stronger development in the Mekong Delta region.

During a working session held on May 27 in Dong Thap province, the Prime Minister met with the Standing Committee of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee to review socio-economic development plans, public investment progress, administrative reforms, national defense, and strategies for achieving double-digit economic growth in the future.

The meeting was attended by several senior government officials, ministers, and provincial leaders. Before the session began, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung visited the Nguyen Sinh Sac Historical Site in Cao Lanh ward to offer flowers and incense at the tomb of Nguyen Sinh Sac, the father of President Ho Chi Minh.

According to reports presented during the meeting, Dong Thap achieved positive economic results in 2025 and exceeded 22 out of 24 major development targets. During the first five months of 2026, the province collected more than 12.2 trillion VND in budget revenue, while investment activities and business development also showed encouraging growth.

Despite these achievements, the Prime Minister pointed out that Dong Thap’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2026 reached only 6.14 percent, lower than both the province’s target and the national average. He said infrastructure weaknesses, slow public investment disbursement, administrative barriers, and limited high-quality human resources continue to create major challenges for the province.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung emphasized that Dong Thap has huge potential because of its important location in the Mekong Delta and its strengths in rice farming, fruit production, catfish farming, ecological agriculture, and border trade. He said the province should move toward a growth model based on innovation, high technology, modern agriculture, and digital transformation instead of depending only on traditional economic sectors.

The Prime Minister also instructed local authorities to accelerate industrial development by attracting investment into processing industries and industrial parks along the Tien and Hau rivers. He encouraged Dong Thap to strengthen logistics systems, develop ecotourism and agricultural tourism, and improve trade connectivity with Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces.

In agriculture, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of protecting efficient rice-growing land while promoting ecological farming and deep agricultural processing. He also asked ministries to support the Mekong Delta with agricultural testing centers to improve export quality for fruits and agricultural products.

The government additionally urged Dong Thap to speed up public investment projects, remove obstacles for delayed developments, simplify administrative procedures, improve the investment environment, and strengthen support for businesses and local communities. Greater attention was also requested for healthcare, education, social housing, digital databases, and local government reforms.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung concluded by saying that Dong Thap must become more proactive, innovative, and determined in building a modern economy that improves people’s living standards while contributing to Vietnam’s national development goals. He assured that the central government would continue supporting Dong Thap in infrastructure, investment, and economic transformation projects.
