Bahrain Advocates for Global Peace and UN Overhaul at Security Council

Bahrain Advocates for Global Peace and UN Overhaul at Security Council

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The Kingdom of Bahrain took part in a high-level open debate at the United Nations Security Council in New York, focusing on the importance of upholding the UN Charter and maintaining international peace and stability.

Led by Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain’s delegation emphasized the nation’s commitment to UN principles. He stressed the need for respect for state sovereignty, non-interference, rejection of force, and peaceful dispute settlement.

Dr. Al Zayani pointed out the various global challenges, such as armed conflicts, terrorism, humanitarian crises, along with emerging threats like climate change, health risks, and cyber issues. He expressed that the multilateral system faces pressure, highlighting the need for the Security Council to bolster global cooperation and rebuild trust.

Highlighting the plight of the Palestinian population, he urged for international support towards a two-state solution and emphasized the necessity for expedited full UN membership for the State of Palestine.

He supported ongoing international initiatives regarding Gaza aimed at ending conflict, rebuilding efforts, and fostering a political process for sustainable peace, referencing dialogues led by Donald Trump under the “Board of Peace.”

The minister reminded attendees that civilians, particularly women and children, are often the most affected during conflicts, warning of worsening food insecurity and displacement on a global scale due to crises.

Discussing regional security, he highlighted tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that disruptions in maritime corridors affect global trade, energy, food, and medicine supplies. He called for the safeguarding of international navigation under existing laws.

Dr. Al Zayani urged Iran to fulfill its international obligations and uphold good-neighborly principles while ceasing support for armed groups and destabilizing activities, as per Bahrain’s stance.

Welcoming the ongoing diplomatic dialogues between the United States and Iran, aided by regional efforts, he expressed hope for a sustained path towards peace.

He stated that achieving stability in the Middle East requires addressing conflicts in Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, alongside broader regional security concerns.

Reaffirming the vital importance of navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz for global commerce, he stressed the need for adherence to international conventions.

Bahrain also highlighted its expanding international role, including its forthcoming presidency in the Gulf Cooperation Council and proactive involvement in the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

The minister noted Bahrain’s upcoming term on the Security Council (2026–2027) and its focus on promoting cooperation in areas such as women, peace and security, youth engagement, and technological advancement.

Dr. Al Zayani concluded by advocating for comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council to enhance its effectiveness and representation concerning current global realities, emphasizing that a more robust UN Charter is essential for worldwide peace and stability.
