In response to safety concerns, the Formula One governing body, FIA, has initiated urgent measures to secure loose manhole covers on the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit. This decision follows interruptions during Thursday’s second practice session, where concerns arose after a track marshal reported a moving cover as cars passed over it.
FIA officials disassembled the problematic manhole for a detailed inspection, uncovering a fault in its closure mechanism that could have led to hazardous situations if unresolved. To ensure stability during the race, the cover was welded in place overnight.
In addition to this specific repair, FIA conducted a comprehensive evaluation of other manhole covers situated along or near the racing line. As a precautionary measure, fourteen more covers were welded down to further mitigate the potential for accidents. These actions were essential for safeguarding the drivers during practice, qualifying, and the energetic night race on the iconic Las Vegas Strip.
Loose manhole covers had previously raised alarms at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. During the inaugural race in 2023, a similar issue caused significant damage to Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari when it encountered a loose manhole, puncturing the car's floor. This incident underscored the urgent need for meticulous track inspections and prompt safety interventions.
Despite Thursday's disruptions, FIA confirmed that Friday's final practice session commenced on time. Qualifying for the much-anticipated 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix night race is set to proceed, with the track now secured and ready for competitive action. The governing body reiterated the importance of these measures for ensuring safety and creating optimal racing conditions for all participants.
Renowned for its lively night races along the Strip, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is a significant event for Formula One aficionados globally. Maintaining the integrity of the track is crucial, especially in light of last year’s safety concerns related to manhole covers and other racing hazards.
With these repairs finalized, teams and drivers are set to immerse themselves in the thrilling race weekend, while spectators can look forward to an exhilarating and secure event at one of Formula One’s most distinctive venues.
