FIFA has revealed that the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup will occur in January 2028. Scheduled from January 5 to January 30, the event's host nation remains undisclosed, although warmer climates are anticipated based on the timing. This decision was finalized during a FIFA Council meeting in Doha, Qatar.
This groundbreaking competition will see participation from 16 teams worldwide, building on the momentum of the expanded men’s Club World Cup and aiming to elevate women’s football at the club level. While the tournament may coincide with certain European domestic leagues like England’s Women’s Super League, it will not interfere with the Women’s Champions League, which is set to take a break throughout January. The United States' NWSL will also be in its offseason during this period.
The tournament will be structured into four groups of four teams each, leading into knockout rounds starting at the quarterfinal stage. Additionally, a six-team “play-in” round will occur prior to the main event, allowing three teams to qualify for the final 16-team roster.
Europe will contribute the highest number of teams with five slots guaranteed. Asia, Africa, South America, and the Concacaf region will each send two teams, with remaining participants, including one from Oceania, competing in the play-in stage. According to FIFA, this tournament aims to boost the global visibility of women’s club football and enhance competition among elite teams internationally.
