US Sees Its Initial Human Case of H5N5 Bird Flu

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Washington, Nov 19, 2025: In a concerning announcement, US health officials have identified the first documented case of H5N5 bird flu in a human, a virus that has mostly been observed in avian species. The affected individual, an older adult suffering from pre-existing health issues, was admitted to the hospital in early November after showing signs of avian influenza.

The Washington State Department of Health reported that initial tests showed the presence of Influenza A H5 virus, with detailed examinations confirming it as the less common H5N5 type. This incident marks a historic first for human infections worldwide, prompting heightened interest among public health specialists and virology experts.

Source of Infection
Health officials indicated that the patient owns a variety of domestic poultry that has had interactions with wild birds. Investigators are exploring the domesticated birds or contact with wild birds as probable infection sources. Authorities are diligently tracking developments to clarify the transmission path.

Understanding H5N5 and Bird Flu
Avian influenza, widely referred to as bird flu, is attributed to Influenza A viruses common among wild aquatic birds. These viruses are classified by their hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) proteins, leading to various subtypes like H5N1, H5N8, and now H5N5.

While some strains result in mild illness for birds, others can cause severe declines in bird populations swiftly. The appearance of H5N5 in humans highlights the virus’s ability to evolve, stressing the necessity for global awareness.

Transmission and Symptoms
Bird flu viruses can be transmitted through respiratory secretions, fecal matter, or contaminated areas. Human infections usually arise from close, unprotected contact with infected avians or their waste.

Symptoms observed in humans range from mild to serious, including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, as well as gastrointestinal disturbances. Severe instances can lead to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, or even fatalities.

Preventive Measures and Global Concern
Health organizations globally advise the public to steer clear of direct contact with sick or deceased birds, adopt protective measures when handling poultry, and ensure thorough cooking of all poultry and eggs. Vigilant surveillance and quick detection are vital to preventing broader outbreaks and monitoring the virus for potential human-to-human transmission.

Chris Green, executive director of the Animal Health and Pandemic Preparedness Alliance, noted: “Although the risk to the general populace remains low, the emergence of H5N5 in a human scenario underscores the continuous danger of zoonotic viruses. Ongoing monitoring and stringent biosecurity practices are critical to avert additional infections.”

The first identified human H5N5 case in the US occurs amidst ongoing unease over the pandemic potential of bird flu strains. Authorities worldwide are reassessing biosecurity measures in poultry operations and live bird markets, ensuring responsive strategies are established to mitigate the spread of this odd yet alarming virus.

As investigations advance, officials stress the importance of public education, hygiene practices, and careful management of backyard birds as the primary protective barrier against ensuing human cases.
