A 16-year-old Form Four student tragically passed away after collapsing during the National-Level Fully Residential School Rugby 7s Tournament in Ipoh yesterday. Police confirmed that the student suffered a torn psoas muscle, a muscle that runs from the lower spine to the upper thigh, which led to internal bleeding and massive blood loss from his right hip.
Ipoh police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the incident occurred at around 10:30 am when the student, from Johor, was about to enter the field for the second half of the match. Teachers accompanying him reported that he did not show any signs of illness or fatigue during the first half of the game.
“The medical officer on duty immediately provided first aid after noticing the student suffering from muscle cramps and suspected seizures. CPR was also performed when his pulse was weak,” said Abang Zainal. Despite the prompt medical attention and emergency measures, the student was pronounced dead at 11:18 am at the hospital.

Following this tragic incident, the Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the tournament. The event will now be rescheduled and held from January 28 to 31 next year. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek expressed deep condolences to the student’s family and confirmed that all safety protocols and emergency preparedness measures were in place during the tournament, describing the death as “unforeseen.”
Minister Fadhlina further stated, “The decision to cancel the matches is important. We want to stand in solidarity with the student’s family and provide our full support during this difficult time.” She attended a yasin recital and tahlil prayers held in memory of the student, Fauzan Sulaiman, at Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
The tragic death of the young student has sent shockwaves across the education and sports community in Malaysia. Authorities have urged all school sports organizers to review safety measures and ensure that medical personnel are fully prepared to handle emergencies during such tournaments.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of health emergencies during high-intensity sports and emphasizes the importance of safety protocols and immediate medical intervention.
