An ex-senior member of the UK Foreign Office has revealed that he faced considerable pressure to support the nomination of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States, intensifying the ongoing political debate surrounding this choice.
Oliver Robbins, recently let go from his position as permanent undersecretary, testified that officials were urged to expedite Mandelson’s appointment in early 2025. Robbins stated there was “constant pressure” from high-level leaders, including Keir Starmer's office, to ensure a swift transition for Mandelson, especially coinciding with Donald Trump's inauguration.
The conflict arises from allegations that Mandelson experienced scrutiny during the security vetting procedures conducted by the UK's clearance authority. Robbins indicated that the agency viewed Mandelson as a “borderline case” and had doubts about his clearance. Nevertheless, he mentioned that officials thought the risks could be navigated, leading to the conditional approval of his clearance.
Prime Minister Starmer accused Robbins of not fully revealing the severity of the vetting concerns prior to Mandelson's approval, asserting that he would have reconsidered the appointment if adequately informed. In response, Robbins countered this critique, claiming he adhered strictly to protocols that limit the dissemination of sensitive vetting details.
Adding complexity to the situation is Mandelson's prior association with Jeffrey Epstein, which eventually attracted significant public attention. Following the revelation of further details regarding those connections, Mandelson was removed from his role a few months after being appointed, prompting the Prime Minister to issue apologies.
During his testimony, Robbins also warned that canceling the appointment at the time might have adversely impacted UK-US diplomatic relations. He articulated his bewilderment surrounding his dismissal and suggested he may pursue legal action in challenge of the decision.
Political repercussions are escalating, with opposition leaders heightening their scrutiny of Starmer. Critics claim that the handling of the appointment underscores a lack of transparency and poor judgment, while the government asserts that all appropriate procedures were duly followed.
As this matter develops, it exacerbates challenges facing the Prime Minister, with critical questions arising about accountability and decision-making at the apex of government.
