In a significant move, Paris is ramping up its actions against the Chinese fast-fashion retailer Shein. The French government intends to approach a Paris court to impose a three-month suspension on the company’s online platform due to safety and compliance issues.
Shein has paused its marketplace operations in France since November 5, where it allows third-party sellers to list their products. This decision followed the discovery of concerning items being sold on the platform, such as childlike sex dolls and weaponry. Notably, Shein’s own clothing collections continue to be available to consumers in France.
The government is determined to enforce tighter oversight across the platform, aiming to prevent any potentially harmful or illegal merchandise from reaching buyers. A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, centering on Infinite Styles Services Co Ltd, the Dublin-based firm managing Shein’s European activities, with the company's lawyers expected to be present.
This move follows Shein's recent venture into brick-and-mortar retail with its inaugural store in a Paris department store, raising questions about the company's obligations to ensure product safety. France has been increasing scrutiny on e-commerce platforms, with investigations also underway for other companies like Temu, AliExpress, and Wish, focusing on issues like children accessing adult content.
This case underscores escalating tensions between governments and international e-commerce businesses regarding consumer safety and adherence to regulations.
