George Clooney revealed a significant turning point from the late 1990s that has left a lasting impact on how he navigates fame today. In a recent chat, Clooney reflected on the unique challenges that come with being in the public eye. He mentioned that each outing often leads to an additional hour of interactions, a reality he initially struggled to manage during his early days of stardom.
During that time, Clooney frequently found solace indoors to shy away from the relentless attention that accompanied his rise to fame as a star on ER. However, a chance meeting with iconic actor Paul Newman drastically changed his viewpoint. Clooney recounted the moment while thinking back on the early pressures of celebrity life that led him to retreat more than he desired.
The encounter took place at the Warner Bros. studio, where Clooney was filming ER and Newman was busy with Message in a Bottle. Clooney, while driving a golf cart, spotted Newman and took the opportunity to introduce himself. Approaching with a friendly demeanor, he simply wanted to say hi, but Newman, with a cigarette in hand, didn’t recognize him at all. Clooney was still on his way up, and Newman hadn’t connected the dots yet.
As they conversed, passersby called out Clooney’s name multiple times. Gradually, Newman began to realize that Clooney wasn’t just another face on set; he was an established celebrity gaining recognition in the industry. Slowly but surely, Newman started to grasp the extent of Clooney’s success.
Once Newman recognized who he was speaking to, he offered invaluable advice that resonated with Clooney for years to come: “George, don’t let them keep you at home.” Clooney instantly understood the essence of Newman’s words. They addressed the common inclination of actors to withdraw from the limelight as they achieve greater fame, thinking isolation will safeguard their privacy. Newman highlighted that retreating leads to a smaller, less fulfilling life.
This conversation brought clarity to Clooney. He concluded that hiding away to escape the public eye wasn’t a defense mechanism; it was a barrier. Taking Newman’s insights to heart, Clooney learned to maintain his connection with the world rather than recoil from it.
While Clooney and Newman didn’t share a close friendship, the latter's influence on Clooney’s career has been significant. Clooney has consistently admired Newman’s body of work and humorously mentioned that he emulated the actor’s style on several occasions, albeit with less finesse. He often cites Newman’s performance in The Verdict as a benchmark in cinematic excellence. Although Newman passed away in 2008 at the age of 83, his legacy continues to inspire Clooney.
Currently, Clooney is busy with the promotional activities for his latest film, Jay Kelly, featuring a stellar cast including Emily Mortimer, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, and Adam Sandler. The movie has premiered in select theaters and will be available for streaming starting December 5. Clooney continues to carry Newman’s words in his heart, reminding him to embrace life fully, stay engaged, and not let fame isolate him from the world.
