The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a significant shift in the nation’s cricketing leadership, naming rising star Shubman Gill as the new captain for the One-Day International (ODI) format. This move, which sees Gill replace veteran Rohit Sharma, signals the formal transition to a new generation of command across all three formats of the game.
For several months, India has systematically restructured its leadership. Gill had already assumed the role of Test captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format in May 2025. Similarly, Suryakumar Yadav took over the reins of the T20 International side in July, leading them to a successful Asia Cup campaign.
The appointment of Gill as the ODI skipper now completes this three-way split in the command structure, placing the burden of leading the Test and ODI teams on the 26-year-old’s shoulders. The BCCI’s decision places faith in Gill's proven record and composure, indicating a long-term vision for Indian cricket.
The decision to replace Rohit Sharma comes despite his recent success in the 50-over format. Rohit's final assignment as ODI captain was a glorious one, as he led Team India to the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title earlier this year, defeating New Zealand in the final.
Rohit’s ODI captaincy era concludes with a major piece of silverware, following his leadership in the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. While he steps down from the ODI helm, both Rohit and star batsman Virat Kohli—who has also retired from Test cricket—have been included in the 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, ensuring their invaluable experience remains in the dressing room during this transition phase.
Shubman Gill will immediately face a baptism by fire in his new role. His first assignment as India's full-time ODI captain will be an away series against Australia, scheduled to begin on October 19.
Leading the team Down Under is always a formidable challenge, and it offers Gill a perfect opportunity to establish his command and tactical acumen against one of the world's top cricketing sides. With a clear captaincy structure now in place across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, the focus shifts entirely to how this new, younger leadership core will manage the expectations and performance of the Indian squad on the international stage.
