Google is exploring a potential modification to its account policy that could limit free cloud storage from 15GB to just 5GB for users who opt not to provide a phone number during registration.
Reports indicate that this trial is being conducted in specific regions, particularly in parts of Africa. During the account setup phase, users may encounter a choice: retain 5GB of storage or link a phone number to gain access to the full 15GB of complimentary storage.
The intention behind this policy, as stated by Google, is to bolster account security, enhance service quality, and improve data recovery mechanisms. However, it has sparked privacy concerns among users wary of connecting their phone numbers to online profiles.
In March, Google revised its support documentation, updating the language from "15GB of cloud storage" to "up to 15GB," indicating potential variability in storage offers for users in the future.
The free storage capacity is utilized across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. While 5GB might suffice for basic tasks, it can be quickly consumed by photos, videos, documents, and email attachments. Users could encounter complications such as blocked incoming messages and limited uploads once they hit that storage cap.
Experts suggest this initiative could aim to deter users from creating multiple accounts solely for additional free storage. Conversely, detractors argue that requiring a phone number in exchange for storage compromises online privacy and complicates anonymous browsing.
This testing phase occurs amidst rising cloud storage costs, as an increasing number of users seek alternative services that prioritize safety and privacy.
At present, this policy is confined to select areas, and no official statement has been made regarding potential worldwide implementation. Current Google account users are not impacted by this trial.
