Howard Rubin, a former Wall Street millionaire, along with his personal assistant Jennifer Powers, is facing serious federal charges for running a $1 million BDSM sex trafficking operation from 2009 to 2019. The operation took place in a soundproof "sex dungeon" inside Rubin’s Manhattan penthouse, where vulnerable women, including some former Playboy models, were forced to perform sex acts. Prosecutors allege that Rubin used force, fraud, and coercion to exploit these women.
Rubin, who managed a Soros fund, and Powers, who helped him run the illegal business, spent over $1 million of Rubin’s money to finance the operation. Powers was responsible for logistics such as booking flights, chauffeuring victims to the penthouse, and transferring payments through services like PayPal and Venmo. They often divided the payments into smaller amounts to avoid bank reporting, hiding the full extent of their crime.
The penthouse rented by Rubin for $18,000 each month was separate from his family home and had a specially designed torture room. This room was painted blood-red and fully soundproofed to muffle screams. It included devices such as an X-shaped St. Andrew's cross, a restraint bed with chains and cuffs, masks with zippers, ropes, metal hooks, sex toys, and even a cattle prod used for electrocution.

Victims were forced to sign nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) before each session. These agreements falsely claimed that the women accepted all risks willingly, forbidding them from speaking about their experiences and imposing heavy penalties if they did. Prosecutors say Rubin regularly crossed the limits of consent, inflicting brutal beatings, whippings, rapes, and electric shocks that caused permanent injury and trauma.
One victim described being strapped to the cross, gagged, and whipped as Rubin role-played as a controlling "daddy." Another was assaulted in Las Vegas in 2018 using force and deception. The victims suffered immense pain and fear, with the NDAs making them stay silent about the abuse.
Rubin, 70, has pleaded not guilty and was ordered to be detained without bail, as officials consider him a flight risk. Jennifer Powers, now living in Texas, has also pleaded not guilty and remains free after posting an $850,000 bail bond.
If convicted, both Rubin and Powers face life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years. The FBI’s assistant director in New York, Christopher Raia, commented that Rubin and Powers used their wealth and influence to trap victims, forcing them to suffer terrible physical abuse and silencing their cries through threats of legal action.
This case involving the former Wall Street millionaire is shocking due to the scale, duration, and cruelty of the alleged sex trafficking ring. It highlights growing concerns over how wealthy individuals can exploit vulnerable people in secret criminal networks.
