Hyderabad Families Devastated by Saudi Bus Incident

Hyderabad Families Devastated by Saudi Bus Incident

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Hyderabad, Nov 17, 2025: A devastating road incident in Saudi Arabia has claimed the lives of at least 42 Indian pilgrims, primarily from Hyderabad, after a bus heading from Mecca to Medina collided with a diesel tanker and erupted in flames near Mufrihat early Monday morning. This heart-wrenching event has led to widespread grief and frantic responses from families of those affected, alongside swift action from Indian officials.

Initial reports indicate that the bus, traveling from Mecca to Medina, collided with the tanker around 1:30 AM IST. Many passengers were said to have been asleep, leaving them virtually helpless as the fire consumed the vehicle. Among the deceased are women and children, although authorities are still confirming the total number of victims. Reports suggest only one person survived.

As news of the crash reached Hyderabad, anxious relatives flocked to the Al Makkah Tours and Travels office, the travel agency used by many of the pilgrims. Family members voiced their anguish and requested government support to assist them in reaching Saudi Arabia. One relative shared, “Seven family members were on the bus. We found out about the accident this morning, and it’s devastating.”

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has labeled the event as a "tragic" bus accident and established a 24-hour control room to support the families of victims. Indian officials are collaborating with Saudi authorities, the Haj and Umrah Ministry, and relevant travel agents to facilitate the identification, medical aid, and repatriation of those deceased. The Consulate, alongside community volunteers, is deploying teams to hospitals and accident sites near Medina.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently in Russia, conveyed his profound sorrow about the incident. Via X (formerly Twitter), he noted, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are extending full support to affected Indian nationals and families. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his condolences and instructed state officials to collaborate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Saudi Embassy. A control room has been set up at the Telangana Secretariat to provide continuous updates to families and oversee relief efforts.

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed communication with Indian mission officials in Riyadh. “They are collecting updates on the situation. I have also reached out to the two Hyderabad-based travel agencies to share passenger details with the Embassy and the Foreign Secretary,” he mentioned. Owaisi called on the government to ensure injured individuals receive proper medical care and aid in repatriating the deceased.

This bus tragedy highlights the risks faced by pilgrims abroad, especially along busy routes between key holy sites like Mecca and Medina. The incident not only represents a profound personal tragedy but has raised crucial issues regarding travel safety protocols and emergency readiness for Indian nationals abroad.

Both Saudi and Indian authorities are actively investigating and providing relief, focusing on immediate support for victims’ families while ensuring accountability in travel operations. As news circulates on social platforms, the tragedy has prompted a surge of condolences, prayers, and urgent calls for more robust safety measures for pilgrims traveling internationally.
