Violence Erupts in Torch Rally Amid Curfew in Imphal West

Violence Erupts in Torch Rally Amid Curfew in Imphal West

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In Imphal West, Manipur, tensions flared after thousands broke curfew restrictions to hold a torch protest seeking justice for recent bomb blast victims.

Protesters Ignite Rally

The demonstration kicked off at 7 pm on Thursday in Singjamei, where numerous participants gathered, torch in hand, demanding the swift apprehension of those behind the deadly April 7 blast in Tronglaobi that tragically took two children's lives.

Rally Moves to Sensitive Area

The torch procession spanned more than two kilometres, reaching Chingamathak, a crucial area near important administrative sites including the Chief Minister’s residence and police headquarters.

Escalating Tensions

Witnesses noted that protesters voiced anti-security slogans, challenging the personnel present. Outnumbered security forces urged demonstrators to vacate the area, citing existing prohibitory orders.

Nevertheless, the situation escalated, leading to a scuffle.

Security's Response

As conflict heightened, security teams employed baton charges and deployed tear gas to maintain order. Some protesters retaliated by throwing stones, exacerbating the skirmish.

Injuries Reported

The clashes resulted in injuries, with at least five individuals hospitalized due to minor wounds and respiratory issues from tear gas. Authorities affirmed that strict curfews are still in effect, limiting nighttime movement in various regions, following previous violence linked to the blast.

Officials cautioned that certain groups may seek to exploit these tensions, potentially inciting further unrest against security personnel.
