Argentina's health officials are currently examining whether a deadly hantavirus outbreak that emerged on a transatlantic cruise ship originated from within its borders.
The ship set sail from Argentina towards Antarctica, but several passengers exhibited symptoms consistent with hantavirus shortly after departure. Authorities are now investigating the origin of these infections.
This inquiry takes place as Argentina reports a significant uptick in hantavirus cases nationwide. As stated by the Ministry of Health, 101 cases have been reported since June 2025, nearly double compared to last year’s figures for the same period.
Experts in public health believe that climate change might be a factor in the rising infection rates as it influences rodent populations and their environments.
According to the World Health Organization, Argentina is among the countries with the highest incidence of hantavirus in Latin America.
Hantavirus is primarily transmitted to humans through direct contact with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. Left untreated, severe cases can lead to serious respiratory issues and may be fatal.
Officials are actively monitoring the situation aboard the cruise while the investigation proceeds.
