Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Congresswoman from Florida, finds herself embroiled in a federal investigation that accuses her of diverting COVID-19 relief funds for personal and political use. The allegations draw attention to her family's business connections and the finances behind her political rise.
On November 19, 2025, the Department of Justice revealed that a federal grand jury has indicted Sheila for unlawfully rerouting $5 million in funds meant for COVID-19 disaster relief. Prosecutors argue that some of this money was redirected to finance her winning congressional campaign in 2021.
As a Democratic representative for Florida's 20th District, Sheila's background includes a Haitian-American heritage with a strong emphasis on healthcare. Her stepfather, Dr. Gabriel Smith, co-founded Trinity Health Care Services, where Sheila was vice president and later CEO. Her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, is also named in the indictment, with both accused of conspiring to mislead regarding FEMA overpayments.
Born to Haitian immigrants, Sheila grew up in Miramar, Florida. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Howard University and a law degree from St. Thomas University School of Law. Her mother, Marie Cherfilus, worked tirelessly to support the family, instilling in Sheila a strong commitment to public service.
The indictment reveals that Trinity Health Care Services received a $5 million overpayment from FEMA in 2021 due to a COVID-19 staffing contract. Prosecutors claim that Sheila and her brother funneled these excess funds through different accounts to conceal their origin, subsequently using a "substantial portion" for her congressional efforts. Additionally, Sheila's tax preparer, David K. Spencer, has been charged with filing a false tax return, allegedly inflating charitable donations and misreporting political expenditures.
Having previously run for Congress unsuccessfully in 2018 and 2020, Sheila won a special election to fill the seat of the late Congressman Alcee Hastings in 2021, contributing millions of her own funds to her campaign. Married to attorney Corlie McCormick since 2017, they are parents to two children.
If found guilty, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick could face up to 53 years in prison, while her brother Edwin faces potentially 35 years. This indictment emphasizes the federal commitment to ensuring public officials are held responsible for mishandling government funds.
