Iran has formally called on the United Nations to take firm action against the United States and Israel, holding them accountable for military strikes that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities in June. This plea comes as recent signals indicate a cautious openness to renewed dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
In a correspondence sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called for accountability from both Washington and Tel Aviv, labeling the strikes as “acts of aggression” against Iran. He demanded reparations including compensation for the damages caused by these attacks.
Araghchi referenced former US President Donald Trump’s admission on November 6 regarding his authorization of Israel’s initial action against Iranian nuclear sites as evidence of direct US involvement. “President Trump and other US officials hold criminal responsibility for the June 13 assaults,” Araghchi stated, appealing to the UN to intervene under international law.
They claim the June attacks led to over 900 casualties, including high-ranking military officials. Tehran maintains that these operations were orchestrated by the United States, demanding justice for the impact on its people.
Despite such tensions, both nations have shown interest in engaging diplomatically, with Trump expressing the US's willingness to negotiate whenever Tehran is ready, extending a “hand of friendship and cooperation.” Iran’s deputy foreign minister echoed the nation's desire for a peaceful nuclear agreement.
Nevertheless, tensions persist as Iran maintains its stance that the UN must react to what it terms an “unlawful act of war” by the US and Israel. This situation highlights the ongoing volatility in the region as both parties cautiously explore diplomatic avenues.
