After being closed for over a decade, a vital border crossing between Iraq and Syria has officially resumed operations. The Rabia crossing in Iraq's Nineveh province reopened its gates on April 20, 2026, and is known as Yarubiyah on the Syrian side.
This crossing had been shut since the early years of the Syrian civil war, with further disruptions caused by the rise of ISIS in 2014. Security concerns during this tumultuous period led to a comprehensive halt on the movement of goods, vehicles, and individuals across this critical route.
Officials point out that the reopening signifies a significant milestone in restoring normal economic interactions between Iraq and Syria. The crossing is poised to enhance overland trade, particularly the exports of Iraqi fuel oil through Syrian territory. This development comes at a time when shipping routes in the Gulf have faced instability, underscoring the necessity for reliable land routes.
Furthermore, the Rabia–Yarubiyah crossing is expected to alleviate congestion at the al Waleed crossing, which has been the sole major active route between the two countries until now. With this latest opening, all major border crossings between Iraq and Syria are once again operational.
Iraqi authorities have announced that the border crossing will be operational 24/7, facilitating the free movement of trucks, goods, and travelers. This initiative is anticipated to generate new employment opportunities for residents in Nineveh province, previously hampered by the lengthy closure.
Collaborative efforts between Iraqi and Syrian officials in recent weeks have focused on implementing technical enhancements and ensuring robust security measures. Comprehensive monitoring systems are now in place to prevent misuse while allowing for trade and humanitarian passages.
