The Israeli military has reported that their recent airstrike on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon resulted in the death of 13 individuals identified as Hamas members. This military action occurred on Tuesday at Ain al-Helweh camp, which holds the distinction of being Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee settlement.
Local Lebanese officials confirmed that at least 13 casualties were registered from the airstrike but provided no specifics on the identities of those affected.
Sources from the Israeli military indicated that the operation was aimed at a Hamas training facility within the camp. Among the deceased was Jihad Saidawi, who was accused of training operatives to carry out assaults against Israel from Lebanese grounds. Israel asserted that this operation is part of its broader commitment to curb Hamas's activities in Lebanon.
In contrast, Hamas has disputed Israel’s assertions, stating that the targeted location was merely an open sports field frequented by youth from the camp. The organization condemned the actions, labeling it a “massacre” and noting that many of the deceased were young boys.
A school located within the camp confirmed that two of its pupils were among those killed. Social media has also circulated images of the 13 casualties as proclaimed by Hamas.
The Ain al-Helweh camp, situated close to the bustling city of Sidon, is historically a congested and volatile zone where various factions exert influence. This attack occurs despite a ceasefire that was established last November, aiming to halt escalating hostilities involving Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah factions in Lebanon.
Israel has vowed to persist in targeting activities it associates with Hamas in Lebanon, accusing militant factions of sheltering behind civilian populations. Meanwhile, residents of the camp are calling for accountability and a thorough investigation into the reasoning behind the strike in such a heavily populated area.
