Israel Discovers Hamas Tunnel with Remains of Lt. Goldin

Israel Discovers Hamas Tunnel with Remains of Lt. Goldin

Post by : Rameen Ariff

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have unveiled a significant Hamas tunnel located in the Gaza Strip that contained the remains of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin for several years. Goldin lost his life during an ambush in Gaza in 2014 amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Recently, his family and the nation experienced closure as his remains were returned after years of uncertainty and sorrow.

A video shared by the IDF reveals the tunnel, which extends under the densely populated Rafah area. This tunnel traverses a United Nations relief site, various mosques, clinics, and kindergartens, revealing the intricate landscape in which Hamas operates. The military has reported that its use included storing weaponry, strategizing attacks, and providing hiding spots for militants.

Measuring over 7 kilometers in length and reaching depths of 25 meters, the tunnel boasts 80 rooms, many of which served as command centers for senior Hamas figures, including Muhammad Shabana, who died alongside Hamas chief Mohammed Sinwar in May 2025. Israel's elite combat unit, Yahalom, alongside Shayetet 13 naval commandos, executed the tunnel discovery.

In a related security operation, the IDF apprehended Marwan Al-Hams, linked to Goldin’s death and believed to possess knowledge of his burial site in the so-called “White-Crowned” tunnel in Rafah. The retrieval of Goldin’s remains in July 2025 was a culmination of careful operations conducted over six months, aimed at ensuring his proper burial in Israel.

This tunnel's discovery coincides with ongoing hostilities in Gaza, escalating after Hamas initiated attacks on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in significant civilian casualties. Israel has since retaliated with military operations, claiming the lives of over 69,000 Palestinians, predominantly civilians as per Gaza's health officials.

Recent airstrikes in Khan Younis and surrounding areas resulted in multiple casualties, including a tragic strike in Bani Suhaila that killed a baby girl. Both parties have accused one another of breaking a precarious six-week truce, leading to rising tensions.

The IDF reiterated that ongoing operations to locate tunnels and recover soldiers' remains are integral to their mission of safeguarding Israeli civilians and thwarting potential attacks. The revelation of this 7-kilometer tunnel underscores Hamas's extensive underground activities, highlighting the persistent risks within Gaza.

Experts warn that such tunnels not only fulfill military objectives but also represent grave threats to the civilian population living overhead. The IDF's findings and subsequent operations stress the crucial need to monitor and dismantle such threats in conflict zones.
