Janhvi Kapoor's Malayalam Accent in Param Sundari Faces Criticism

Janhvi Kapoor's Malayalam Accent in Param Sundari Faces Criticism

Post by : Minna

The trailer of the upcoming film Param Sundari, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, has stirred controversy, particularly regarding Janhvi's portrayal of a Malayali character. The film, directed by Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan, aims to showcase a cross-cultural romance between a girl from Kerala and a boy from Delhi.

Backlash Over Diction and Pronunciation

Malayali influencer Divya Nair publicly criticized Janhvi Kapoor's Malayalam diction in the film's trailer. She stated, "Poor diction can sometimes be forgiven, but here, the Malayalam words themselves aren't clear or correct." She highlighted a specific scene where Janhvi introduces herself as "Theykkapetta Sundari Damodaran Pillai." Divya pointed out that "Theykkapetta" is slang in Malayalam for someone who has been dumped, making the introduction unintentionally humorous. Additionally, she noted that the surname "Pillai" is mispronounced; in Malayalam, it should be "Pilla."

Divya further questioned the film's production choices, saying, "The film was shot in Kerala on a massive budget. Why couldn't the makers spend a fraction of that money on hiring a local dialect coach?" She suggested that casting a native Malayali actress, such as Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Nithya Menen, Sai Pallavi, or Samantha Ruth Prabhu, would have brought authenticity to the role.

Support from Other Malayali Artists

Actor-singer Pavithra Menon also expressed concerns over the casting of Janhvi Kapoor in a Malayali role. She questioned why a native Malayali actor wasn't chosen for the part, emphasizing the importance of authentic representation. Pavithra's video criticizing the portrayal was briefly removed from Instagram, sparking discussions about censorship and freedom of expression on social media platforms.

Janhvi Kapoor's Response

In response to the criticism, Janhvi Kapoor defended her portrayal of the character Sundari. She explained that her character is "half-Tamilian and half-Malayali," and emphasized her personal connection to the role. Janhvi expressed her admiration for Malayalam cinema and stated that she approached the role with respect and dedication.

Broader Debate on Cultural Representation

The controversy surrounding Param Sundari has sparked a broader debate about cultural representation and authenticity in Bollywood films. Critics argue that the film perpetuates stereotypes about Malayali women, depicting them in traditional attire with jasmine flowers in their hair. This portrayal has been criticized for being reductive and not reflective of the diverse experiences of women from Kerala.

The situation has also raised questions about the casting process in the Indian film industry. Some believe that casting directors should prioritize cultural authenticity and consider hiring actors who are native to the region being portrayed. Others argue that actors should be able to take on diverse roles, regardless of their cultural background, as long as they approach the character with respect and commitment.

As the release date of Param Sundari approaches, the film continues to generate discussions about cultural representation in Indian cinema. While Janhvi Kapoor's performance has been defended by some, others remain critical of the film's portrayal of Malayalam culture and language. The ongoing debate highlights the importance of authenticity and sensitivity in depicting regional identities in mainstream media.
