Renowned poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar has sharply condemned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar regarding a contentious episode involving a Muslim woman at a public gathering in Patna. Akhtar asserted that the chief minister should offer an unqualified apology to the woman after her veil was removed without her consent.
This unsettling event occurred during the Samvad function at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, where new appointees were being presented their letters. A video circulating widely on social media depicts Kumar questioning the woman’s veil, known as a naqab, before physically removing it himself.
The footage incited a national political and social uproar, with many accusing the chief minister of disregarding personal choice, religious customs, and the dignity of women. Criticism has also emerged from various global quarters, including remarks from some West Asian nations.
In response to the backlash, Javed Akhtar shared a powerful stance on the social media platform X, emphasizing that although he traditionally opposes the notion of parda or face covering, he believes no one should be forced to remove it.
He articulated that personal beliefs should not be used to justify violating or humiliating another individual publicly. Akhtar denounced the act as intolerable, highlighting the need for respect towards the woman. In his view, disagreement with a tradition does not grant anyone the right to insult or demoralize those who adhere to it.
The lyricist further addressed claims of selective outrage against him, firmly denying such accusations. He clarified that he has consistently opposed regressive ideologies, even within his own cultural context, challenging critics to identify any of his works that depict women disrespectfully.
Akhtar has frequently advocated for women’s rights and dignity. During a literary event earlier this year, he questioned the rationale behind a woman feeling ashamed of her appearance, asserting that dignity is not contingent on whether one chooses to cover up or not.
This incident has placed pressure on Nitish Kumar and his party, with opposition members and social advocates demanding accountability and an apology. It has reignited discussions surrounding personal freedom, respect for religious traditions, and appropriate conduct expected from public figures.
As this discourse evolves, many hope the emphasis remains on mutual respect and consent, particularly when actions are taken by individuals in authoritative roles.
