South Korean football giants Jeonbuk Motors announced on Monday that head coach Gus Poyet will be leaving the club after just one season at the helm. Poyet, the Uruguayan coach known for his previous stints with Sunderland, Real Betis, and the Greece national team, took charge at the start of the recently concluded campaign. Under his leadership, Jeonbuk achieved remarkable success, securing both the K League title and the Korean FA Cup, marking a highly successful season for the club.

The club paid tribute to Poyet on social media, writing, “Walking together for the rebirth of Jeonbuk Hyundai, taking us to a new historical moment. Good luck in the future, coach.” This season’s achievements were particularly notable as Jeonbuk finished 14 points clear at the top of the league, clinching a record-extending 10th K League title and ending a four-year championship drought.

Poyet’s tenure brought a dramatic turnaround for the team, which had finished in 10th place in the 2024 season. His leadership not only restored Jeonbuk’s dominance in South Korean football but also reinforced the club’s reputation as a powerhouse in the K League. Fans and analysts alike praised Poyet for his tactical acumen, man-management skills, and ability to quickly galvanize the squad, leading to one of the most impressive league campaigns in recent history.
