Afghanistan is making significant strides in boosting its trade with India in light of ongoing tensions with Pakistan affecting its access to global markets. This initiative follows the official visit of Afghanistan's Minister of Industry and Commerce, Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi, to New Delhi, which began on November 19 and spans five days.
Sign of Enhanced Bilateral Engagement
Upon his arrival, Minister Azizi received a warm welcome from Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs, indicative of India's eagerness to engage with Afghanistan on a higher diplomatic level. This marks a notable milestone in the diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations since 2021.
Business Development at the Forefront
His first major activity included attending the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 in New Delhi, where he led a substantial Afghan delegation focused on expanding trade prospects and establishing new business partnerships. Indian officials provided insights on investment avenues, trade facilities, and enhancements that would allow Afghanistan to participate more fully in upcoming exhibitions.
The Afghan delegation explored various exhibits featuring products such as carpets, gemstones, handicrafts, and dried fruits—key exports from Afghanistan. Minister Azizi also engaged with Afghan entrepreneurs in India to address trade hurdles, market accessibility, and strategies for boosting exports.
This event marks the first attendance of an Afghan minister at the trade fair since 2021, signaling a thaw in diplomatic relations.
Context of the Change: Challenges with Pakistan
Afghanistan's increasing interest in strengthening ties with India coincides with the ongoing blockade, trade limitations, and escalating tensions with Pakistan, which have complicated the export of Afghan goods to world markets. Frequent border closures have resulted in significant financial losses for Afghan exporters, compelling the government in Kabul to seek stable alternatives.
An Indian official confirmed both nations are collaborating to enhance the India-Afghanistan air corridor, currently featuring two daily cargo flights between India and Kabul. An Indian logistics firm is also joining efforts to strengthen freight capacity.
Previously, Afghanistan had aimed to rejuvenate shipping through Iran's Chabahar Port; however, sanctions have hindered that plan. Consequently, both countries have shifted their focus towards air trade channels.
Rapid Strengthening of Trade Ties
India ranks as one of Afghanistan's key trade allies, exporting rice, tea, sugar, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and machinery, while Afghanistan exports agricultural products, gemstones, and ores. Kabul is also looking for Indian investments in mining and hydroelectric endeavors, which could substantially invigorate its economy. The recent upgrade of India's embassy in Kabul to full operational status in October 2025 reflects a significant move towards rebuilding ties.
A Regional Strategic Shift
This new direction also conveys a critical political message. Afghanistan is demonstrating its intent not to be overly dependent on Pakistan for its international trade routes while actively pursuing stronger economic relationships with India.
With enhanced partnerships, a fully operational air corridor, and increasing diplomatic interactions, both nations are prepared for a promising future in trade.
