The prospects of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma featuring in India’s 2027 Cricket World Cup appear increasingly uncertain, as the team begins a cautious transition under new leadership. While both legendary batsmen remain integral to India’s 50-over squad, head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized focusing on the present rather than looking too far ahead, even though he acknowledges their immense talent and experience.
Kohli and Rohit, who together have played 567 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), continue to be selected for India’s upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia. However, their long-term roles are unclear, especially as India appear determined to manage a gradual transition in the squad rather than being forced into sudden changes in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup. Rohit Sharma, who captained India to the Champions Trophy title earlier this year, has already been replaced by young star Shubman Gill as the new captain of India’s ODI team, signaling a shift towards fresh leadership.
“Look, the 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and it is very important to stay in the present,” Gambhir told reporters after India completed a clean sweep in the Test series against the West Indies on Tuesday. “They are obviously quality players, and their experience will be a big asset in Australia. Hopefully, both players will have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we will have a successful series.”
Rohit, who led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, will be 40 years old by the next edition of the tournament, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Kohli, a former World Cup winner in 2011, is a year younger, raising natural questions about longevity at the international level.
The future of India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also appears uncertain. The 36-year-old, who was part of the Champions Trophy-winning squad earlier this year, has been left out of the ODI team for the upcoming Australia series. Despite his omission, Jadeja remains optimistic and focused on performing whenever he gets opportunities. “Winning a World Cup is everyone’s dream. I had narrowly missed out last time, and next time we will try to make up for it,” he said during India’s second Test against the West Indies. Jadeja also praised the team management for communicating the reasons behind his exclusion, noting it helped him stay motivated for future chances.
As India navigates this transition period, balancing the experience of cricketing stalwarts like Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja with the rise of younger talents like Shubman Gill, the team faces critical decisions that will shape its journey toward the 2027 World Cup. Fans and cricket experts alike are watching closely to see how India manages this delicate mix of experience and youth to build a competitive squad for the global stage.
The message from Gambhir is clear: while Kohli and Rohit remain invaluable assets today, India’s cricketing future will depend on nurturing the next generation of leaders while ensuring the team remains strong and competitive in every series leading to the World Cup.
