Los Angeles put a curfew in place for a small part of downtown after five days of protests against President Trump’s immigration raids. The protests started on Friday after immigration agents arrested workers in the city. Many people gathered downtown, blocking roads and protesting outside federal buildings. Some protests turned violent, with property damage, graffiti, and broken windows.

Mayor Karen Bass said the curfew would run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to help stop more violence and looting. The curfew only covers about one square mile downtown, not the whole city. Most people in Los Angeles are not affected by the curfew. The police said the curfew was needed to protect people and businesses after several days of unrest.

During the protests, police and National Guard troops were seen outside federal buildings. Officers arrested nearly 200 people on Tuesday night, mostly for not leaving when told to. Some people were also arrested for blocking the freeway, vandalism, and other crimes. Most protesters left when police arrived, but some stayed and were arrested.

Governor Gavin Newsom and other leaders asked President Trump to stop sending more troops, saying it would only make things worse. Newsom called Trump’s actions an “assault on democracy” and said that using the military like this was not right.

Faith leaders joined the protests, asking everyone to stay peaceful and not respond to violence with more violence. Even with the curfew, some people kept protesting, but the night was quieter than before.

The protests are expected to continue, and the curfew might stay in place for several more days.
