Authorities in Tunisia have ordered a one-month suspension of the Tunisian League for Human Rights, one of the oldest human rights groups in Africa and the Arab world. The move has raised fresh concerns about increasing restrictions on civil society in the country.
The organization confirmed the suspension and described it as a serious violation of freedom of association. It warned that the decision represents a direct challenge to democratic principles that Tunisia has worked to build over the years.
The development comes under the leadership of Kais Saied, who has repeatedly expressed concerns over foreign funding of civil society groups. The government argues that such funding could influence domestic affairs and destabilize national interests.
Rights advocates say the suspension is part of a broader pattern of actions targeting independent organizations. In recent months, several groups working on issues such as migrants’ rights and women’s rights have also faced temporary shutdowns ordered by courts.
Concerns have also been raised about growing pressure on journalists and activists. Reports indicate that individuals have been detained over social media posts and public statements, reflecting tightening control over freedom of expression.
The suspended organization has stated that it will challenge the decision in court while continuing its efforts to support victims of human rights violations. It emphasized that its work will continue despite the restrictions imposed.
Observers note that Tunisia has seen a shift in governance in recent years, with increasing centralization of power and reduced space for dissent. The latest developments are likely to intensify debates about democracy and civil liberties in the country.
