A federal court in Washington DC has sentenced 22-year-old Evan Tangeman to 70 months in prison for his role in a large-scale cryptocurrency laundering operation. The case is linked to a global criminal network allegedly led by Malone Lam.
Prosecutors described the operation as a sophisticated enterprise that handled more than $263 million in stolen digital assets. The network reportedly used advanced social engineering techniques to gain access to victims’ funds and then laundered the proceeds through various channels.
According to court documents, Tangeman admitted to participating in a racketeering conspiracy and laundering at least $3.5 million. He will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Authorities stated that Tangeman played a key role in converting stolen cryptocurrency into cash and facilitating luxury expenditures. The group reportedly spent funds on high-end properties in cities such as Los Angeles and Miami, as well as luxury cars and extravagant lifestyle expenses.
Investigators revealed that members of the network were mostly young individuals with no legitimate source of income. Despite this, they were able to acquire expensive assets, including vehicles like Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce, using illicit funds.
Following the arrest of key figures, including Lam and other co-conspirators, Tangeman attempted to obstruct justice by instructing associates to destroy digital evidence. Law enforcement later seized several high-value assets connected to the case.
Officials said the network operated between 2023 and 2025 and was formed through connections on online platforms. The case highlights growing concerns over cybercrime and the misuse of cryptocurrency systems for illegal financial activities.
