In a thrilling display, Lando Norris, leading the Formula One championship, conquered the wet qualifying round for the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Friday. The McLaren star secured pole position, strengthening his bid to extend his championship lead.
Norris clocked in a fastest lap of 1:47.934 seconds, surpassing reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.323 seconds. Meanwhile, McLaren teammate and title contender Oscar Piastri qualified fifth, leaving Norris with a 24-point lead ahead of the Saturday night race on the Strip.
“It was incredibly stressful,” Norris reflected post-session. “The track was very slick, and misjudging the kerbs could easily lead to a loss of control. No one has raced in the rain here before, making it hard to anticipate the conditions.”
Piastri, aiming to climb the order in the race, commented, “We have a competitive car that performs well under all conditions. I believe we can have a solid outing tomorrow.”
Carlos Sainz made a mark by qualifying third for Williams, while George Russell, the previous year's winner of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, came in fourth. Despite a minor power steering issue, Russell managed to secure a top-four spot.
Notable performances included sixth spot for Liam Lawson in Red Bull, Fernando Alonso in seventh for Aston Martin, and Isack Hadjar grabbing eighth for Red Bull’s second car. Ferrari faced challenges in the wet conditions, with Charles Leclerc qualifying ninth and Pierre Gasly tenth for Alpine.
Lewis Hamilton encountered a particularly challenging session in his Ferrari, finishing at the back after hitting a bollard and struggling to heat his tyres — marking an unprecedented low in his career.
The qualifying round witnessed several incidents, including Alex Albon crashing his Williams and Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes finishing in 17th. Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull faced his own set of troubles, ending up 19th.
The qualifying session was dynamic, with drivers adjusting to the tricky conditions as both Sainz and Verstappen temporarily clinched the fastest lap before Norris ultimately secured pole. This dramatic qualifying sets an exciting stage for the night race on the illuminated streets of Las Vegas.
As Norris aims for a third consecutive victory on Saturday, McLaren looks to build on a robust season and maintain pressure on Red Bull for championship glory.
