Singaporean filmmaker and actor Jack Neo is set to bring back one of his most beloved creations with the announcement of a new movie, Liang Po Po: The Comeback, marking the return of the iconic grandmother character to the big screen after more than two decades. The film is slated for release during Chinese New Year in 2026, promising a festive treat for longtime fans and new audiences alike.
Jack Neo shared the exciting news on his Facebook page, posting the movie’s teaser poster and writing, "Hoo hoo hoo, okay, I’ve held it in for so long. I didn’t tell you all because I wanted to give everyone a surprise. Hoo hoo hoo old friends, longtime fans, after 24 years, I’m meeting everyone again." The poster features Liang Po Po eyeing a wad of cash, hinting at the humorous and mischievous tone the character is known for.
The following day, Neo released the first teaser trailer for the film, which closes with Liang Po Po asking the audience if her hair looks messy, retaining the quirky charm that made her a household name. The character of Liang Po Po first appeared on the Channel 8 sketch comedy series Comedy Night, which ran from 1990 to 2003. The show was also home to other popular Singaporean actors, including Mark Lee, Henry Thia, Marcus Chin, and the late Moses Lim, and it launched several iconic characters beloved in Singaporean pop culture.
Liang Po Po made her initial leap to the big screen in 1999 with Liang Po Po: The Movie, which went on to gross S$3.03 million, solidifying her status as one of Singapore’s most memorable comedic figures. In addition to Liang Po Po, Comedy Night also introduced other popular characters by Jack Neo, including Liang Ximei, who later earned her own TV series and movie.
