Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit weighed in on the vibrant discussion surrounding the introduction of 8-hour work shifts for actors. She passionately argues that every actor should have the liberty to determine how to balance their professional and personal lives. This conversation gained traction after Deepika Padukone reportedly sought 8-hour shifts, which ultimately led to her withdrawal from the upcoming film 'Spirit', directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and featuring Prabhas.
Madhuri, a seasoned figure in Bollywood, recounted her own experiences managing demanding shooting schedules while nurturing a family. She believes that setting work hours is a personal choice and reflected on her role in the movie 'Mrs Deshpande', where she frequently faced grueling shifts of 12 hours or more. Madhuri, who enjoys immersive work, acknowledges varying preferences, stating, “If a woman has that power and can say, ‘okay, I want to work these many hours,’ then that’s her prerogative, and that’s her life.”
Madhuri highlighted that actors should not feel compelled to conform to a standard work schedule. Her opinions bring to light the pressing need for flexibility within the film industry. She insisted that work hours should be a reflection of individual preference and based on a concerted agreement between actors and producers. This outlook has ignited debates among industry professionals regarding the necessity of structured work hours versus allowing personal choice.
Earlier, Rani Mukerji also expressed her thoughts on the matter of flexible work hours in Bollywood. She noted that schedules have usually depended on mutual understanding between actors and producers. Rani stated, “These discussions are more prevalent today because they are being explored outside. But this has always been the case in every profession. If the producer is comfortable, the project proceeds. Otherwise, it doesn’t happen. No pressures are being applied to anyone.” Madhuri’s comments resonate with Rani’s stance, underscoring the actors' independence in deciding their work-life balance.
Madhuri Dixit continues to command respect as one of Bollywood’s leading actresses. She rose to fame through iconic films such as 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!', and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. Her power-packed performances in 'Prem Pratigyaa', 'Parinda', 'Mrityudand', 'Pukar', and 'Lajja' earned her critical acclaim, including a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Chandramukhi in 'Devdas'.
To this day, Madhuri remains a dynamic presence in films and web series. She has starred in productions like 'Dedh Ishqiya' and the Netflix series 'The Fame Game', as well as films like 'Total Dhamaal' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3'. Her advocacy for more flexible work hours underscores her keen understanding of the demands of the industry and the personal needs of actors. By supporting freedom and individual choice, Madhuri is contributing significantly to the ongoing dialogue regarding better work conditions and work-life balance in Bollywood.
