On Monday, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rattled Seram Island in Indonesia, occurring at a depth of 136 kilometers, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. Thankfully, there have been no immediate injury reports.
This seismic event followed the eruption of Mount Semeru, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, which occurred just a day earlier. The eruption produced ash clouds that soared up to two kilometers high. Indonesia’s volcanology agency has instructed locals to remain at least 2.5 kilometers away from the volcano due to risks like ash fall and possible lava flows.
Known as Mahameru, Mount Semeru has a significant history of eruptions. Over the last two centuries, it has erupted multiple times, resulting in significant damage and evacuations in the surrounding regions. The most notable eruption in December 2021 tragically claimed 51 lives and destroyed hundreds of homes, prompting the evacuation of over 10,000 people.
Indonesia is situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone characterized by intense tectonic activity, which makes it inherently vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Just the previous Thursday, a magnitude 5.9 tremor struck near Ambon, Maluku, underscoring the persistent seismic threats in the region.
Authorities are vigilantly monitoring both the seismic and volcanic activity. Residents in impacted areas should adhere to safety protocols and remain aware of any updates regarding threats.
