Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Slovenia Opt Out of Eurovision 2026

Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Slovenia Opt Out of Eurovision 2026

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a significant development, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia have decided to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 following the decision to include Israel in the lineup.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed that the contest will continue as originally planned after discussions in Geneva. The meeting was attended by broadcasters from nearly 50 nations, addressing concerns over alleged biased voting and the Gaza conflict.

RTVE of Spain, categorized among the “Big Five” broadcasters, expressed that the decision has amplified their “distrust in the contest’s governance.” Similarly, Ireland’s RTÉ condemned participation as “unthinkable” due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Slovenia and the Netherlands voicing comparable ethical objections.

This controversy partially traces back to claims that Israel’s 2025 representative, Yuval Raphael, profited from voting irregularities. As a response, the EBU has established new regulations aimed at eliminating political impact on voting and made these changes conditional upon Israel’s involvement in 2026.

Despite the upcoming boycott, there are nations that support the EBU’s statements. Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland have lauded the new rules that promote fair competition. Germany also approved the decision, underscoring the importance of cultural diversity and solidarity.

This division underscores the increasing division within the Eurovision community, as it attempts to reconcile its commitment to neutrality with prevailing geopolitical issues. As the event’s 70th edition approaches, the EBU faces the formidable task of fostering unity while addressing broadcaster choices and international concerns.
