Malaika Arora on Bollywood dance numbers’ evolution

Malaika Arora on Bollywood dance numbers’ evolution

Post by : Meena Ariff

For years, the inclusion of elaborate dance numbers in Bollywood films has been a subject of debate. While some have questioned their relevance to storytelling and accused them of promoting vulgarity, Malaika Arora believes that the concept has significantly evolved. She feels that such songs have come a “long way,” shifting from provocation to pure performance and artistic expression.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Malaika spoke about how the definition of special dance numbers in Bollywood has changed over time. “Earlier, they were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often detached from a woman’s individuality,” she explained. “Today, filmmakers are more conscious. They integrate these numbers into stories with stronger character context. It’s less about being provocative and more about performance and presence. I see it as an evolution where women can own their space.”

Malaika acknowledged that item songs have long been associated with the male gaze but shared a different perspective. “Yes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I’ve always looked at them differently. For me, dance is about confidence and expression,” she said.

“When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment and bringing my own energy to it. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters most. It’s about celebrating the art and having fun with it rather than overthinking the labels.”

Malaika Arora has recently made a comeback with a special dance number titled Poison Baby in Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s latest release, Thamma. For her, the experience was more than just another glamorous appearance. “Doing this song was about celebrating my journey and showing that you can stay relevant and passionate at any stage,” she said. “Age doesn’t define your capacity to perform or inspire.”

Known for her exceptional dance skills and stage charisma, Malaika has delivered some of Bollywood’s most iconic numbers over the years — from Chaiyya Chaiyya and Gur Naal Ishq Mitha to Munni Badnaam Hui. Each of these performances has cemented her status as one of India’s most influential dance icons.

Apart from her film appearances, Malaika continues to make her mark on television as a judge on India’s Got Talent, alongside Shaan and Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Through her words and performances, Malaika Arora continues to redefine what it means to own the stage — proving that dance in Bollywood is no longer just about spectacle but a celebration of individuality, confidence, and artistic evolution.
